HAIR HOW TO: faux bob trend

Rodarte’s fall 2012 collection paired earthy makeup with a voluminous side-parted bob. Of course, you don’t need scissors to get thIS look: this vintage inspired look just needs curling tongs, and lots of bobby pins. This textured bob is a great adaptation of the 20s with yet still classy, and modern. I love the stars as the added embellishments, very on-trend.

faux bob: how to

1.

Apply a volumising mousse to towel dried hair and crunch the strands with your fingers in an upward motion. You need lots of tamed volume for this style. Gilbert’s hair team used Kérastase Mousse Volumactive for the show.

2.

Create a clean side parting, by taking a section from the left to the right side of the head.

3.

Take a section of hair from the crown and back comb using a tailcomb brush to give the desired volume. If your hair is dull, give it the added volume by gently backcombing all along the roots. Be mindful of the flyaways here.

4.

Use a 3-branch curling iron to create these Rodarte waves for the entire head. You need soft wavy curls for this look without losing the volume.

5.

You can also give an added crimping effect to the hair by taking two sections of hair at the back of the head and giving it the water ripple effect with the hair curler. A hair crimper can also be used to do this (keep in mind that a crimper won’t be as wavy as this runway look and you might risk thinning the hair down).

6.

Now start creating the faux bob by tucking the strands of hair underneath the head and pinning it. Keep lots of bobby pins in hand for this step. The bob doesn’t have to be neat, you can get as messy as you like, while still maintaining the volume at the bottom.

7.

Once you reach the right side of the face, tuck in the hair by leaving some strands loose on the side. One side needs to be a bit longer than the other.

8.

Spray a strong-holding hairspray to settle the style in its place.

9.

Once done, you can add any type of embellishments to the style. At the Rodarte show, Gilbert used a row of gold bobby pins with stars as adornments on each model.
